Disappointed. Not what it used to be.DeannaI bought two ALEX units today and am disappointed by the decline in quality since purchasing my original unit in 2021. The old unit was MDF, smooth and solid. The new units are particleboard, with rippled, textured drawer sides and backs showing through the thin melamine wrap. They feel incredibly cheap by comparison.
The drawer slides are my biggest concern. My old unit opens smoothly and effortlessly with one finger. The new ones feel like they’re grinding, require much more effort and jerk awkwardly instead of gliding smoothly.
Returning them isn't simple. I drove over three hours round trip to buy them as the shipping fees are ridiculous at 50% of the purchase price to deliver just 200 km.
This experience makes me question investing in an IKEA kitchen. If quality has declined this much in five years, how can I trust their cabinets and drawers to meet the standards IKEA used to represent? IKEA has seriously shaken my confidence in the quality and value it once offered.1
Nice but don’t fit letter size hanging foldersNormaThese look very nice, and assemble reasonably quickly. The plastic plugs make quite a lot of noise when you hammer them into place for the drawers, so not ideal for assembling when or where others may be disturbed. And I was very disappointed when I realised that the drawers are just a shade too small to accommodate the letter size hanging folders that I had planned to use. Legal size hanging folders are fine, you just can’t fit as many and there is wasted space when you are filing letter sized documents.4
Fits the porpoise. No issues.ElenaEasy to assemble. Does it's job.5
AlexAWorks well and looks good. The assembly was well planned. We did at first put it together upside down but it was easy enough to reverse.5
AlexShelleyEasy to put together and very sturdy5
FunctionalTraceyEasy to assemble and seems sturdy enough.5
It's a decent charcoalBrendaMy first non-white Alex purchase. Looks great in the "office" area of my living room where nothing is "white".5
Poor quality, drawers fall out easilyMalgorzataDrawers are supposed to be secured to the metal guiderails with short screws. The problem is that the screws are to narrow. They buckle both in the too big drawer holes and in the guardrail holes. As a result, they do not support anything, fall out easily and so does every drawer, as there is no mechanism to block it.1
Excelled storageKarenUsed 2 of these in combination with IKEA countertop for sewing table. Drawers slide well. Went together easily.5
Terrible qualityAllanThe sidewalls assembled just fine. But the drawer were so cheap and the precuts so poorly done that the 'wood' was coming apart just trying to get things into place with a mallet. Ikea quality is dropping.2
Bring back white stained oak!MinjiLove this drawer, super versatile and looks sleek. Perfect for the office + vanity area. Please bring back the white stained oak!5
Love the storage but have an issue....EmmiIs there any way to remove the drawers easily after it is built? Something fell down from a drawer in the back and now I cannot close the bottom drawer. The drawers don't seem to have a release to make them easy to take out.4
A must have for any officeJoelleI have already bought three of these, there’s no other way that I can organize all my paperwork without this drawer unit. It’s sturdy, well-made and very functional.5
Just the Right Number of DrawersBlaineThis 5-drawer cabinet has sufficient storage for my office. Would have been nice if it was the same height as the Galant office cabinets I also purchased for my office.4
Awesome!KristaGreat product!5
Stunning! Once put together;)PamelaTook a total of 6 hours. It’s stunning once built! We did need to back track and take apart - You MUST pay attention to every detail in the photos and double check even when you think you’ have it right. Make certain the track on the sides is the right way before u begin. It’s deceptive.
BEFORE putting in the top drawer, fasten the desk to the top, first. The instructions do not specify, you need a good eye and I’m sure if u build often from ikea you’ll have a better chance of getting it on the first run! Complex part - getting the drawers on the tracks. The track pulls out making it easier to attach the drawers. I figured that out when I was left with 12 screws at the end lol - took some fiddling to understand where they go and how to use them.
Even though the build was tedious and time consuming- final product worth it! It’s stunning!!5
No problems putting this togetherAngieI bought 2 of these drawer units and the Lagkapten table top to make my desk. These items combined went together fairly easily. It took me a couple of hours to put everything together by myself. I reviewed the assembly instructions and found a You Tube video which helped. I used a cordless screwdriver for the many screws used for both drawer units which saved some time. The hardest part was attaching the table top to the cabinets because there are only drill holes on the bottom part of the table top which must match up to the drill holes on the drawer units. After some patience and moving the table top a little at a time, I had success screwing together the table top to the drawers. All of the drawers slide with no issue but are a little stiff and I am hoping with time and use they will become smoother.5
nice storage unitSamthis is a good solution for all your office misc supplies like pens, paper clips, etc. it easily fits a 15" laptop so you can store it when not in use. the drawer inserts make it easy to store all the small stuff.5
