My fridge and freezer are making an unusual/strange noise, why is that?

Refrigerators and freezers can sometimes emit different sounds, usually it is normal operating noises that ensure that the product works as it should. Sometimes, however, the sound may indicate that the freezer needs a manual defrost.

Buzzing Sound
Cause: A short-lived, buzzing sound can be caused by a high ambient temperature or when the compressor starts.
Solution: These are completely normal operating noises from the fan and compressor. The fan distributes the temperature correctly, and the compressor ensures the correct temperature is reached. This is not a technical error.
Rippling Sound
Cause: Rippling noises are caused by the refrigerant moving through the circuit.
Solution: This is a perfectly normal operating noise as the coolant moves through the lines. This is not a technical error.
Clicking Sound
Cause: The compressor or other product components switching on and off.
Solution: This is a perfectly normal operating noise when compressors, thermostats, and other components turn on and off. This is not a technical error.
Scratching Noise
Cause: Scraping or scratching noises can occur when excess condensation forms in the freezer, causing the fan to freeze or hit formed icicles. Increased condensation is most commonly caused by opening the door frequently or leaving it open for too long.
Solution: Manually defrost the freezer by following these steps:
  • Turn off the freezer and pull it out if possible. Remember to protect the floor.
  • Prop the freezer door open. Keep the door open continuously for at least 24 hours to ensure all ice melts, including ice in hidden spaces.
  • Leave the bottom drawer in place to collect dripping meltwater. Place a roasting pan or similar container on the floor and lay down towels to protect the floor.
  • Monitor the back of the freezer, as water may spill onto the floor if heavy ice has formed. Empty the plastic container at the back of the freezer as needed.
  • Ensure the inside of the freezer is completely dry before restarting it.
